Harry’s Place

Harry’s Place – ‘a shared community space’, offers a range of community, allied health, education, training and direct care services and incorporates a fully operational Administration Building for Carpentaria Disability Services.

The commercial office fitout for this project was completed by DCOH with Practical Completion achieved on the 14th of December 2018.

The project delivered a unique shared services facility in the heart of Darwin’s northern suburbs and supports the community sector and non-profit organisations through shared corporate and reception services, adaptable conference and meeting room facilities, specialist consultation rooms and open plan functional office space.

Throughout the project DCOH created approximately 50 local jobs utilising local subcontractors and suppliers which ensured the financial benefits flowed through into the local community.

Carpentaria

Carpentaria delivers a range of community, allied health, education, training and direct care services and incorporates a fully operational Administration Building.

Carpentaria Stage 2 provides people with disabilities that are leaving school a pathway to further education and gives them an opportunity to develop essential skills to survive in everyday life. Currently there are no other service programs or buildings in Darwin that cater for this group of young people with disabilities.

The special use facility will incorporate:

  • An adult day service centre with recreation, vocational and education facilities;
  • Short term disability accommodation; and
  • Aged care respite accommodation.

The Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) Outpatients and Front Lobby Refurbishment project encompassed two separable portions:

  • Separable portion 1 – The refurbishment of the existing outpatients area
  • Separable portion 2 – The refurbishment and extension of the existing front lobby

Separable portion 2 of the project involved the extension and refurbishment of the RDH main entry and foyer, the creation of a new phlebotomy services area, transit lounge, new Indigenous liaison offices, additional administrative space, a new reception, new lobby stairs, and the upgrade of the ground floor public and staff lift lobbies.

Project features

  • Demolition of the existing foyer stairs, internal walls and partitions, ceilings, floors, redundant services and glazing to the main entry and airlock
  • Removal of asbestos from the ceiling space and floor including all associated penetrations, adhesives and fixings
  • Construction of the new extensions to the existing building
  • Construction of the new floor layout for the main lobby and reception area, phlebotomy and transition centre including new foyer stairs, ceilings, partitions and floor coverings, joinery and painted finishes
  • Installation of multi-facetted glazing to main entry airlock

The project entailed the design and construction of a new building on top of the existing Royal Darwin Hospital annexe. This provided new accommodation for the hospital’s allied health services and enabled the building of a new paediatrics ward.

It was a two-stage project, the first stage was the design and construction of the allied health facilities and structure. The second stage was the design and construction for the fit out of the stage two consulting offices. These works were a necessary precursor to the refurbishment of the current outpatient’s area.

The new building comprised consulting rooms including physiotherapy, paediatrics, offices and a specialist hearing booth. Inherent requirements for the design included encompassing safety and ease of access for children and clients with mobility challenges.

The project required completion of a fast-tracked design from contract award.

Project features

  • Both project stages were completed ahead of a very tight program and during the wet season, with no unplanned disruptions to hospital operations
  • Successfully managed the coordination of two distinct zones within a live and operating hospital environment
  • The installation of new services fed from the existing hospital, including use of state-of-the-art LED lighting to provide both future low maintenance and energy efficiency. These were the first LED lights used in the hospital
  • Indigenous participation exceeded the contractual (10%) and our own (15%) targets. This is a highly significant achievement, particularly given this project was one of the first to eventuate following the enactment of the Indigenous Participation in Construction Policy in October 2014
  • The project took approximately 30,000 man hours to complete. During this time, there were no Lost Time Injuries (LTIs).

Since 2009, the Alan Walker Cancer Care Centre (AWCCC) has enabled cancer patients to be treated locally. Previously, all patients requiring radiation treatment were required to travel interstate, removing access to their families at a time when family support is critically important. The new radiation oncology facility was designed in consultation with the local community, ensuring all aspects of the centre reflects the comforts and needs of all Territorians. An example of this is the design of the patient waiting area which includes indoor and outdoor spaces that open directly to adjacent bushland.

During the first 12 months of operation, the facility treated 342 patients with more than 5,000 episodes of radiation therapy, and 240 patients with more than 3,000 episodes of chemotherapy. The operational efficiencies achieved are a tribute to the building design, quality of construction and the collaborative approach to design (combining the architects, construction team, and the stakeholders in constructive and effective design decisions).

The AWCCC has been widely recognised as the benchmark radiation oncology facility in Australia.
