This state-of-the-art facility has officially opened its doors, welcoming students, staff, and the public to explore its world-class features. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and labour shortages, DCOH delivered the project on time and within budget. This achievement was made possible through diligent collaboration, stakeholder engagement, a commitment to local sourcing, and the dedication of a loyal subcontractor workforce.
Danala is a significant architectural addition to Darwin’s CBD, offering advanced features and progressive spaces for the Territory community. The new CDU campus houses a variety of facilities including an art gallery, moot court, libraries, cutting-edge teaching spaces, Territory FM radio station and Library and Archives NT. The design showcases two 22-meter-high internal atriums and a grand staircase featuring local timbers and luxurious finishes. DCOH has helped bring CDU’s vision to life, creating a modern space for knowledge sharing and learning, while incorporating the latest technologies and materials. This project marks a new era for education and community engagement in Darwin and the Territory.
The project encompassed various key components aimed at transforming the designated site. Excavation work was a pivotal part of the project, involving digging to a maximum depth of 8 meters across a 5,017 square meter area. The construction of 230 underground carparks distributed over two basement levels is a significant aspect, with the primary vehicle access from Wood Street.
The development included the erection of an eight-storey education establishment and community buildings, complete with a full integrated fitout. This fitout also extends to the Library and Archives NT and the Territory FM radio station. The project further incorporates an extensive landscaping initiative, covering 6,000 square meters of public realm and interface areas to enhance the overall aesthetic and functionality of the site.
